Why do wolves howl at the moon?

November 15, 2007 By: Buddy Category: wolves 4 Comments →

Why do wolves howl at the moon? If you notice, once one wolf starts howling, they all start howling. You’ll also notice that dogs do the same thing, one starts a howl and they all follow with grunts, then whines, then a full-blown howl! One reason wolves howl is to communicate with each other - if the wolf has been separated by his pack, he’ll howl to find and communicate with his packmates. Howls are very loud and can be heard from a great distance. Another reason wolves howl is to tell how close they are to neighboring packs, that way they can stay away from each other. Interestingly, the assumption that wolves howl at the moon is only that - an assumption, nothing has proven that wolves are actually howling at the moon, although some say that wolves may indeed howl more when the moon is out just because they’re out more due to the light the moon provides which allows them to see better at night.

Adopt a lonely wolf!

Here’s another great gift idea - for Christmas, or birthdays, or that hard-to-give-for nature lover - adopt a lonely animal! The National Wildlife Federation has a new program - the Wildlife Adoption Center. You make a $30 donation and you can adopt a gray wolf, a polar bear, desert tortoise, moose, Canada lynx, or grizzly bear. You’ll get a Certificate of Adoption, a screensaver pertaining to the animal you adopted, and a stuffed plush animal of the animal *(go for the lonely wolf!) you adopted. Visit the National Wildlife Federation Adoption Center for more information. When you’re there you’ll notice the tortoise looks super cool and wise, but go for the gray wolf! Adopt the lonely wolf!

Real Chupacabra Sighting in Texas

On Sept 1, 2007, ABC News did an article on a real chupacabra which a woman from Texas found dead outside her ranch in Cuero, Texas. Real Chupacabra Texas Sighting…apparently this is only one of three ugly fanged creatures found. She saved the body for DNA testing, and believes that it is what has been responsible for sucking the blood from her chickens (chupacabra actually means goat sucker in spanish). Vets claim that it is probably just a strange breed of dog. The pic on the left is from the Texan woman holding her photo of the dead chupacabra.

For those who don’t know, the chupacabra is a mythical beast which is said to drink the blood of livestock (hence the name goat sucker). Sightings are prevalent in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Some sightings report it as resembling a reptile, others claim it looks like a dog or a wolf. Forked tongues and wings are also sometimes associated with the chupacabra. Drawing you’ll find on the internet make the chupacabra out to look like a weird alien creature.

So, is the chupacabra legend real? Based on fact? It appears it might be from this photo!
