But sometimes either the costume store is sold out, or you don’t have time to go out to one, or possibly you simply don’t have enough money! What then? Well, luckily you can in fact make fangs at home with things you probably have stuck in a drawer somewhere. Of course, we are fans of the werewolf costume! And if you’re trying to be a werewolf, here are some ideas if you’re trying to put your own werewolf costume together.

Makeup werewolf nose - Making a werewolf nose out of face makeup is probably the less expensive of the two choices as all you will need to accomplish the task is black makeup. Most people tend to model their “werewwolf” nose after a wolf’s nose, in that they make the tip of the nose black in a somewhat triangular face. When the rest of the face is madeup, the effect is acceptable and easily visible as a wolf nose.

Latex Prosthetic werewolf nose – The other choice for your werewolf costume face is to use a latex prosthetic for your nose. While this method will be a little more expensive than simply using face makeup, it is not overly price prohibitive as you can find a simple latex nose in most halloween costume stores fairly inexpensively. In order to apply the latex nose, you will simply adhere it to your face with spirit gum. The video below shows a good method to ensure that your spirit gum stays sticky enough to hold the nose to your face all night. After the nose is stuck to your face, you’ll apply liquid latex around the edges in order to effectively blend the hard edge of the latex in with the smoothness of the skin, making it appear to merge seamlessly with your face. Finally, you’ll use face makeup to blend the entire feature in with your face. The end result should be a fairly realistic looking werewolf nose!

So, now that we’ve established that, for your werewolf laceration, the tools you’ll need include:
thin make-up brush
black face paint
scar wax
skin-colored face powder
red and brown eyeshadow
fake blood

1. Werewolf Hair – if you’re wanting to dress up as the sterotypical “hollywood” werewolf, then this will include alot of hair! You can buy “theatrical” hair from many costume shops to stick on your face, tops of hands, or other key parts of your body.

2. Eyes – To give your costume a unique look, you can add some special contacts to your outfit to change your eyes…this is what actors in movies such as Twilight and TV shows such as Vampire Diaries do! If you decide you do want contacts, you’ll probably want to order them now, well ahead of halloween, as most of the reputable companies will require your eye doctor’s info – and you only want to get these from a reputable company!

3.  Fangs – Every good werewolf costume has a nice pair of fangs!  You don’t have to find werewolf-specific fangs, just go to a halloween costume shop and check out the fang selection – typically they’ll be advertised as vampire fangs, but they’ll work for your werewolf costume too!  They even have fangs that descend via the use of your tongue.

4. Full Mask – If you want something that covers a bit more of your face, masks are also a nice way to go – they’ve come along way from even a few years ago! There are even masks where you can open your mouth – check out this animotion mask…

5.  Face Makeup – if you don’t care for a mask covering your face, you might want to try a more natural look with makeup. There are special werewolf makeup kits out there, however if you don’t want to buy a kit, just stick to the different shades of brown, black and white, and you’ll be on the right track.

These are just some ideas to get you started…you certainly don’t need to buy any of these things from a store to make a great werewolf costume – there are plenty of homemade costumes that are really great out there (have you seen the wolf tail that moves by itself?), with a little creativity you can have a really great costume!

While some people use the animatronic wolf tail as an addition to a halloween costume, others use it during the rest of the year to express themselves, and sometimes simply to have fun. Most of the mechanical wolf tales are handmade. A selection of videos is below showing different types of tails in use from different angles, while the last one shows how to make one yourself.

Here’s what we liked about the werewolf animotion mask:

• The look.  From a distance, the animotion mask looks pretty good.  You can definitely tell it’s a werewolf.  And a mean-looking one at that! The deep wrinkles and the long vicious-looking teeth can easily be seen from a distance, and add a sense of realism that some plastic werewolf masks are sometimes missing.
• The fit.  The mask is fairly lightweight, yet feels sturdy and comfortable when on.  It’s also surprisingly not overly hot when it’s on.  In addition, foam pads included with the mask help customize it to your face.  When the velcro is tightened around the back of your head, the fit is secure and the mask stays on pretty easily no matter which way you turn your head.  Also the mask covers the ENTIRE head, not just the front!
• The animotion.  The “animotion” part of the werewolf mask is definitely the coolest part of the mask.  Basically, what this means is that the mask is designed so that the mouth of the mask opens with your own mouth.  Imagine: You’re out at night, and you growl or howl.  You open your mouth, and the mask’s mouth opens at the same time!   In other words, this werewolf mask is not your standard stiff non-moving mask mouth, but rather actually opens when you want.  And not only does the mouth open when you open your mouth, but the lips also draw back exposing the werewolf’s gums, making the werewolf look even meaner. Pretty cool. And it does work.  Just maybe not as fantastically as you might think just based on the mask’s advertisements.  (See cons below).

Cons:

• The werewolf animotion mask looks great from a distance, but a close-up inspection reveals flaws. For example, the edgework where the fur and plastic part of the mask meat are not the best, and not much was done to hide the sewn edging around the face.  We also found some stray stitching in odd places around the fur.
• The back of the mask does not have a closure.  This means that although the mask does cover the entire head, and there is plenty of material for it to close, the fur in the back sometimes does flap open.  On the plus side, this can be fixed fairly easily be adding  a tiny piece of velcro to the back to help secure it.
• The eyesockets are pretty big.  This is advertised as being a “pro” because it allows for a pretty good field of vision – which is true.  Unfortunately however, you can see the human inside the mask pretty easily because of the big eye sockets.  Fortunately however, there is a fairly easy fix which is to either where a ski mask underneath the mask, or where black eye paint around your eyes to help conceal the human skin under the werewolf mask.
• The animotion technology is not perfect.  The idea and concept behind the animotion is pretty cool – a werewolf mask mouth that opens with your own.  And there is an advertisement video which demonstrates just how cool it is.  And to a certain degree, it does work.  It does not however work as much as advertised in the video.  The mouth itself only opens about an inch or so. If you try to open it any wider (for example, as wide as the video advertisement makes it seem it should open), the mask rips in the corners of the mouth.  When we tried to figure out how the advertisers opened the mouth so wide in the advertisement, a close inspection of the video revealed that the advertisers actually cut the corners of the mouth to allow it to open up wide!! A little disappointing.  We also found that the upper lip (which is meant to retract when the mouth is opened) came unglued within the first few minutes of our opening the mask….easily fixed with a dab of glue.  Finally, the last imperfection in the animotion part of the mask is that people have reported pinching of the cheeks caused by the hinges inside the mouth’s jaw (although we did not feel anything).

Overall, is this werewolf mask worth it?

Yes!  The coolest part of this werewolf mask is the animotion…and while this is also the part with the most flaws, overall, the coolness factor outweigh the negatives.  The technology is not perfect, but when you know about the problems you can fix them (or work with them).  And at this price level, you’re not going to find many other werewolf masks that let you move your mouth when you howl.

There are different styles, but most of them will involve using makeup to darken the nose, extend the mouth, and add some type of hand-drawn fur onto the skin. In addition, most face paintings are accessorized with wild puffed-out hair – either your own, or a store-bought wig.

You will notice that one area that people have different face painting ideas on is what color to make the werewolf. Some will paint the whole face a dark color and then paint fur and whiskers and details on top of the base color, giving a less human feeling to the wolf, while others will keep the face more natural looking, and simply paint the darker “fur” and details on top of the more natural skin color. People also differ on the placement of fants – they can be painted on the face itself (as depicted below in one of the videos), or you can get some fake fangs that go inside your mouth. Either choice has a great effect.

To do your own design, take inspiration from pictures of wolves that you can find online. Also, take a look at some werewolf and wolf face painting designs that people have created:

1. Have a good costume – Yes, of course everyone dresses up for halloween.   Adults who like to give out halloween candy love effort and creativity and the better your costume looks, the more candy you’re likely to get. You probably will also end up getting better and bigger candy too!

2. Go to houses with Lights on – Having the porch lights on is the universal signal that the house is open and ready to give candy! Don’t bother wasting your time at houses without the lights on, chances are they’re either not home or are halloween grinches who don’t give out candy!

3. Trick or Treat in Groups – This tip is good for two reasons. First, as a safety measure, it’s always good to be in a group of trick-or-treaters, especially since you will be out at night! Secondly, by trick or treating in groups you are likely to get good candy – the adults in the houses see a group of kids coming and pull out the big bucket – sometimes even letting you grab the candy yourself because there are so many of you!

4.  Big Trick or Treat bag! – Yes, you want a big trick or treat bag so you can hold more candy, but you don’t want it to look like a big bag! Here’s the easy trick to accomplishing that – bring a pillow case! A pillow case is the traditional back up candy bag.  You can also hold it bunched around the neck so it doesn’t look so big, but it will have tons and tons of room!  Also, a pillow case will never tear on you from the weight of all the candy!

5.  Check your candy before you eat it – everyone like to lay out their halloween candy after a night out in the neighborhood. You should be checking your candy not just to see what the best is and which houses to go back to, but more importantly check it to make sure it is safe to eat – wrappers should not be opened and candy should look fresh!

Happy Trick or Treating!

1. Vampire Hunter 
• You can go all out and dress like Van Helsing, or you can do something a little more like Corey Feldman in the movie the Lost Boys (red bandana tied around the head and cammo shirt).  Either way, be sure that you’re carrying a vampire killing kit!
2. Werewolf (or Vampire) Victim
• This is a pretty easy halloween costume – all  you’ll need to do is get some old clothes and tear scratches and slashes into them and then add fake blood and wounds to the appropriate places (for a vampire victim, maybe some blood pinpricks on the neck, for a werewolf victim, a big bitemark!)
3. Priest Warrior (that fights vampires / werewolves)
• If you’ve seen the movie priest with Paul Bettany you have an idea of what this halloween costume should be.  Dress in black, carry plenty of crosses and a fake dagger around your waist!
4. Werewolf in Human Form (or a Werewolf pack if you have a bunch of people)
• You can do this Jacob Black style with just shorts and no shirt and maybe a tattoo on your arm, or you can do it wolfman style with messed up hair, dirt on your face, and torn jeans and shirt.  Don’t forget the fake blood on the front of the shirt!
5. Boy Who Cried Werewolf
• This is a pretty simple costume, you just dress up like a kid – in jeans and jacket and sneakers. The rest of the costume is about attitude.  Your whole attitude needs to be one that is obsessed with monsters – everything you say or do should be about a monster!
6. Your Favorite Werewolf Movie
• No, I didn’t say a character in a werewolf movie, I said you should be the werewolf movie itself!  This is a very simple costume, ideal for the last minute situation – all you need is a werewolf movie poster!  Glue or tape the werewolf movie poster onto a cardboard the exact size that it is.  Now, you will want to wear this cardboard on the front of your body by drilling holes in the cardboard and getting a cord to tie in the holes so that it hangs around your neck and on the front of your body! Dress the rest of your body in black so that the main focus is the movie poster!
7. Full Moon
• You can do this by either having a moon mask for just your face, or creating a full-body moon costume out of paper mache!
8. Wolf
• The wolf halloween costume can quickly become very complex. To keep it simple, focus on the face.  Sometimes all you need is just a wolf face mask!
9. Woodsman
• Every ancient werewolf legend seems to have a woodsman of some sort in it.  To be a woodsman you’ll just need a pair of overalls, plaid shirt, some boots, a beanie, and a fake ax.
10. Little Red Riding Hood
• It’s quite possible that the wolf in little red riding hood was a werewolf! This halloween costume is a classic and very easy to make yourself – once you have a red cape everyone will know who you are!

How to become a Werewolf victim for Halloween!

The first thing you will need is a nice big (fake!) Scratch mark on your body! The area of your body that you put this mark depends on where you were clawed by the werewolf. Imagine the night that you were being chased… how did that werewolf get ahold of you? Did he/she claw at your back? Did it grab your neck? Your arm or legs? Be creative on picking the position of the fake werewolf claw mark.

The basic materials for this outfit effect are: a thin brush to paint on Halloween Costume paint, Halloween costume paint, and fake skin.

After you have your werewolf scratch mark complete all you have to do is put on clothing that makes it seem as if you were just chased by werewolf! Try some ripped clothing in places that the werewolf attempted its attack! For example, a ripped shirt or torn pants on the knees would make it seem as if you made a great escape. Don’t forget to use some fake blood on your costume too!

To add more realism to your werewolf victim costume idea you can try using werewolf contacts or even try werewolf claws. Both of these additions will make it seem as if you are in mid transformation! Don’t forget to fully appreciate your “characters” situation… acting goes a long way into making your Halloween costume believable.

There are two methods for creating the mummy costume.
1. The first is more involved but looks more professional, it is made by using real strips of fabric from white bed sheets. (Linens would have been used on real Egyptian mummies).
2. The second way to make the outfit is by using toilet paper, which is less expensive but does have some drawbacks.

The first method: The “real fabric” custom mummy costume:

Creating your homemade outfit is fairly easy and straightforward if you know how to use a sewing machine. This is a great time to ask Mom for a favor! You can do all the prep work and deliver the materials to the person that will do the sewing for you, mom! (If you cannot do it yourself).

This homemade method requires that you use old sheets for the mummy wrap. By cutting the old sheets into strips you get the same effect as a real mummy would have had thousands of years ago. You can use old white sheets from around your house, get some at goodwill, or even ask some friends or family for an old set of white sheets.

Real egyptian mummies would, at times, be wrapped in linens donated by the family of the deceased.

If all else fails you can always buy a cheap flat sheet from the store for a moderate price. The basic idea is to cover yourself in the fabric strips to get the mummy look that you want!

If you cannot get your hands on a sewing machine be creative and try to attach the fabric strips another way!

The second method: The Classic toilet paper mummy wrap

This is the best way to make the costume at an affordable price. Most of us know how this method works! You grab some rolls of toilet paper and begin wrapping yourself in it until you get the look of a mummy that you want. Of course, one problem with doing it this way is that the toilet paper is easily ripped and you will probably end up losing alot of your costume. But if you need to make a brief appearance on Halloween night and need a fast costume this is definitely the way to go. Also, never go trick-or-treating in the rain with this costume on!
