In truth, there is more than just what you see in movies regarding werewolf transformations. In fact, there are a few different categories that exist when talking about transformations….most common among them are the M-Shift and the P-Shift. When discussing these types of shifts, it should be noted that it is not just werewolves that this encompasses, but in fact, they also apply to therians as a group…meaning that, for some therians that are not werewolves, the shifted state is not that of a wolf, but perhaps that of another animal.

What is an M-Shift?

The M-Shift, or mental-shift is a transformation that happens mentally. In other words, it is not a physical transformation of the body into a wolf, but rather an altered state of mind where the person has transformed mentally, and now thinks and acts and feels like a werewolf / wolf, even having enhanced senses in many cases. M-shifts can be both voluntary and involuntary.

Although everyone has their own method to accomplish an M-Shift, most commonly, one learns this type of shift through meditation and concentration. Many people lie or sit down in a quiet place and close their eyes. They then concentrate on the wolf…envisioning it in their mind’s eye, watching it walk, howl, and be. They concentrate on this “wolf” and open their spirit and mind, accepting it into their selves. With practice and time, eventually the shift will take place. When in the shifted state, the person will no longer “see” the wolf in their mind’s eye, but will rather feel it in their spirit. They will have a heightened sense of awareness, and often a feeling of clarity in their thinking. From the outside, people will not necessarily know that the person has shifted, but on the inside, the person will feel like a wolf. They will see things from a wolf’s perspective, and often may have enhanced senses. M-Shifts are not permanent and there are no side effects. Many people are able to accomplish learning this type of shift within a month or two with constant practice. For others, it can take weeks, months, or even years to learn.

What is a P-Shift?

The other common type of transformation is called the P-Shift, which stands for physical-shift. This is where the body actually physically shifts into werewolf form….this is also commonly called a “shapeshift” and why werewolves are sometimes called “shapeshifters”. This type of shift is much less common than the M-shift, although it is certainly the most well-known type of shift…when one thinks about werewolves, one always thinks of physical transformations! Like M-shifts, P-shifts can be both voluntary and involuntary. The methods with which one can achieve a physical transformation are diverse and surrounded by controversy, as physical transformations are often cited by modern-day science as impossible.

Are there other types of Shifts?

Yes, there are. The most common are the P-Shift and the M-Shift, although you will sometimes hear people refer to other types including the S-Shift (which stands for spiritual shift), the Astral Shift, the Aura Shift, and the Dream Shift (just to name a few).

For those that do, the process is never the same from one werewolf to the next. It can be scary, painful, enlightening, powerful…or even none of these…or sometimes even all of these things.

Most of the physical transformations that you think of are the ones portrayed by movies and TV, and nearly all of them are terrifying in some or every aspect. They depict skin stretching, bones lengthening, faces popping, eyes bulging, and teeth growing. They are often gruesome, gory, and scary. And while a werewolf facing a physical transformation certainly would not want to watch these representations of the process as they are likely to scare him or her, humans cannot help but be entranced by the process. And because of this, each filmmaker tries to outdo the last. Are these accurate depictions of a transformation? Only a werewolf that physically shifts can tell you. Are these terrifying depictions of transformations? You bet. Here’s a look at some of the most terrifying….each filmmaker has a different take on the process, but you can see a general theme amongst the videos -filmmakers depict it as painful, messy, and scary…but is it?

This is indeed one of the weirder werewolf transformations that I’ve seen. During the transformation, the wolf appears to grow and transform – at first it appears almost as though he’s transforming into a bat or a vampire, then it appears that he has morphed into some type of a goat creature. The transformation continues however and he almost appears to be a devil before the process clears itself and it appears that he is shifting into a werewolf!

This transformation does bring up a good question, which is – when the werewolf transformation happens, does the shift always occur as a direct process, directly to a werewolf, or are there other changes along the way? We’ll examine this question in the near future…

When werewolf transformations are talked about or depicted, it’s almost always a male that transforms – you hardly ever hear about or see the female werewolf transformation. Part of it is because generally humans associate werewolves mainly with the male gender – but there are indeed female werewolves.

There are a few movies that depict the female shift – most notably, there is the She Wolf Of London. (Yes, I also wonder what the obsession is with London and werewolves!!)

The original movie was a film from 1946 about a series of vicious attacks that hit London. Detectives start investigating a supposed “wolf-woman” that may be responsible for the attacks. Who is the She Wolf of London?

In the 1990s there was a TV series by the same name that had some female werewolf transformations..here are a few clips.

Best part of transformation scene is at 1:50 in the video…

One frequent question that humans and new werewolves have is if accidental injuries are possible during a werewolf transformation. The werewolf transformation process varies from shifter to shifter, so each individual will have a different experience. In general however, the likelihood of injuries during a transformation is small – especially and specifically for “older” more experienced werewolves.

Occasionally however, there are exceptions – particularly in newer shapeshifters who may experience such small inconveniences as inadvertently scratching themselves or accidentally knocking into something. These minor injuries which can result are due more to clumsiness than any harm incurred during the actual transformation process itself. This clumsiness eventually wears off with experience, and they will find future transformations virtually free of these prior incidents.

With experience comes the knowledge of how feels as a werewolf and what you can and cannot do during the transformation. While actual self-injuries are remote, there are some side effects which can occur as a result of a transformation which will leave you feeling less than 100%. The side effects that can occur include sore muscles, swollen fingers, a tight feeling of the skin, itchiness, and sometimes a slight stiffness in the joints.

Is a werewolf transformation in Sheldon Cooper’s future on the Big Bang Theory? In Season Five, Episode 18 of the show, in addition to our favorite nerdy scientists, could there be hair, howling, and shapeshifting? And more importantly, will Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, Amy, or Penny become a werewolf?

Keep reading! We have an EXCLUSIVE inside scoop on the SCRIPT for this upcoming episode!

The Werewolf Transformation Synopsis- The Big Bang Theory (SPOILER)!!

(Synopsis) As she works on scientific discoveries in her lab, Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler will accidentally stumble upon the werewolf transformation disease that infects humans and gives them their shape-shifting curse. Amy will immediately trust nobody with her secret and discovery – not even her best friend Penny – knowing the profoundly ill effects that could result if the world ever found out that werewolf transformations are possible. There is one exception of course – she can tell her secret to her “boyfriend” Sheldon! – Can’t she?

After Amy shares her hair-raising discovery with Sheldon, Dr. Cooper weighs the pros and cons of testing the new found laboratory experiment, but where should he test it? On an animal? A dog perhaps? No! The source of werewolf infection must be safe guarded and kept secret. Dr. Cooper soon realizes the only way to safely test the werewolf disease is to infect himself!

Sheldon infects himself and battles with the curse for days, keeping it a secret from his best friends, including his roommate Leonard Hofstadter. Leonard gets suspicious, however he never figures out what is happening to Sheldon!

It is not long before the full moon arrives and Sheldon transforms into a werewolf! And with the werewolf transformation comes the longing to feed! But who would be the easiest target? Leonard? Penny? Dr. Cooper has a moral conflict of who might taste better, but there is no question that somebody will need to be sacrificed to the beast he has now become…

Meanwhile, after Sheldon’s transformation, his friends become suspicious – particularly Raj and Howard. The two of them decide they have to contain the monster. Howard builds a device that will keep the monster locked up with minimal harm to all of the humans. It seems however that Raj understands the werewolf culture; he knows werewolves are serious business! Does Raj have a dirty hairy secret as well? Is his entire family infected? Is his sister, Ms. Koothrappali, a werewolf? Could Leonard have been dating a girl werewolf and never knew it?!? Only time will tell if Raj reveals the cure to the curse!!

There is a theory that one method to become a werewolf is a direct and involuntary result of the extremity of the situation the human finds himself in. The idea behind this theory is that it is not a curse or virus or accident of birth that causes the werewolf transformation, but rather it is being subjected to some type of extreme condition. The extreme condition or situation calls upon a latent, subconscious ability or instinct that the human has which results in a transformation into something more powerful that can better handle and cope with the situation – a werewolf.

Is the werewolf transformation simply a survival response?
This is an interesting theory that needs looking into further. It is widely known that when a human is under stress or in a dangerous situation their body involuntarily produces a survival response. One example of this is adrenaline – a remarkable hormone that can cause a human to have remarkable powers. Adrenaline can cause blood vessels to dilate, the heart rate to increase, and air passages to expand. These physical changes in the body can cause the human to have more power and strength than before – a reaction that the body intends the human to use to defend itself. There have been many documented accounts of super-human strength of people in dangerous situations with adrenaline coursing through their body – things that could never be done under normal circumstances- things such as women lifting entire cars off their children!

Evolutionary adaptation could explain…
The idea that the werewolf transformation may occur due to some type of evolutionary adaptation / involuntary response to an extreme sitaution is therefore within the realm of possibility. This could account for why some report that they are unable to control the transformation. This could also account for why some report no memory of transforming into werewolves (many known emergency or stress reactions in the body can cause memory loss – perhaps if werewolf transformations are a response to stress, they do as well!)

Is it true, is this how to become a werewolf?
I think that it is certainly possible that this could be a way in which the transformation process could happen, however I do not think it is the only method, nor do I think it is even the most common method in which one would become a werewolf – there are just too many stories in cultures throughout the world that point to other more common causes of the werewolf transformation. This theory is however incredibly interesting especially considering its more scientific approach and could certainly be the cause of some rarer types of transformations.

We just had a poll that that asked the question, “does the werewolf have a tail,” the results of this poll were pretty surprising! The results were nearly evenly split on “yes they always have tail” and “most do have tails” …depending. What this is saying is that most of you think that the werewolf does indeed carry a tail!

Why is this surprising? Well, for one, if a werewolf does have a tail where did it come from? Obviously the human side of the wolf did not have the tail, so this would leave only one obvious answer; the tail grew in the process of transforming from the wolf side. Which then leads to the obvious fact that once the werewolf is ready to change back the tail must shrink back into shape!

What I would like to point out is that this process would be rather long, possibly the longest part of the transformation depending on how long the tail actually is. But what if the tail did not actually “shrink” back during transformation. It is highly possible that the tail would snap off (fall off) rather than minimize in size in the very short time it takes a werewolf to compete the reverse transformation. This breaking off of the tail would be completely painless since by the time the transformation is reversing the weighted one is already is so much pain he/ She would never even know that the tail has already fallen off!

There are a few creatures that have changing eye colors, and among these are werewolves and vampires. Indeed, werewolf eyes and vampire eyes are among the most distinct and unique eyes. Because they live among humans (and in some cases were once humans) their eye colors are most of the time very similar to that of humans. In fact, most of the time, their eyes can be mistaken for human eyes – but this can change in an instant depending on their mood and state of mind.

werewolves eyes change color to gold..

Werewolf Eyes (as depicted in Teen Wolf)

The eyes of the werewolf vary in color, and have been reported to be everything from green to brown to blue. Although they do not have to be any specific color, one of the key characteristics of werewolf eyes is that even though they can be any color, the color is always brilliant and very eye-catching. The eye color is enhanced with an inside glow that is incredibly forceful and attractive to anyone they meet. This is especially true and most noticeable during and around transformations when the werewolf’s eyes are not only briliant colored, but can sometimes even changes eye colors, taking on a goldish tint.

vampire eyes change color to red…

Vampire Eyes (as depicted in Twilight)

The eyes of the vampire are especially recognizable because of the reddish tint they change to when they are hungry or craving blood. Vampires generally cannot control this tint, but rather it is an involuntary side effect of their thirst. It also does have the benefit of terrifying the vampire’s prey to the point that many prey are immobilized by fear when they see the vampire’s eyes. During most other times when the vampire is not incredibly hungry, their eyes too can come in any color, however they are most often darker colors, most commonly dark brown.

and the zombie…?

It is also interesting to note the eye colors that zombies reportedly take on in myths and legends. Like the rest of their bodies, the zombie’s eyes are dead. When you look at them, they therefore take on the appearance of being dead – their eyes change from what they were as a human, and are often described as being pale, faded, and sometimes even losing color completely, sometimes appearing completely white. The whites of their eyes can also sometimes be red, but not in the way that vampires are red because of hunger, but rather in a way in which you can see the veins and life they used to have….almost as if their eyes were bloodshot.

While there is no question that there is some kind of link between wolves and werewolves, the question that link sometimes leads to is, is it possible for wolves to become werewolves the same way that humans can become werewolves?

Humans becoming werewolves
Yes. Werewolves are (for the most part) born in human form. Sometime during the course of their lives and existence, they will shift and discover that they are in fact werewolves. The various theories of how and why and when someone actually goes through their first transformation a hotly debated topic. Irregardless however of how or why it happens, it is generally accpeted that a future werewolf-to-be resembles a human at birth. Now whether or not the baby is actually human at birth (there are some that are actually born werewolves) is another question altogether.

Wolves becoming werewolves
Can an actual wolf become a werewolf? Not usually. There is some history to suggest that there are some werewolves that were born wolves. Meaning, they actually started their existence as wolves (usually born to a true wolf pack) and later eventually shifted to human form. This type of werewolf is often only ever referred to or referenced in historical literature, lore, and legends. And the references are vague and often reference witches or magic as a reason for the transformation. A wolf-born werewolf – while possibly much more common centuries ago, is certainly not as commonplace today, and extremely difficult to even prove if even exists or not.

Finding the balance between the human and wolf aspects of a girl is hard to do, so many movie or TV directors tend to go the easier route by just using the male werewolves. On the screen, it’s easier for humans to relate to a male werewolf bulking up and changing physically than it is to relate to a female doing the same thing. Most of the movies you see will therefore depict the male transformation process, so when you do find a good female transformation scene, they’re really fun to watch… hare are some videos pulled from various anime, cartoons, TV Shows, and movies of the female shift. Enjoy!

When a werewolf physically transforms, what happens to the werewolf’s clothes? This is a question which most humans wonder – many authors and movies have tried to address the answer to this question. The answers that the media tends to give fall into one of three categories.

New Moon Wolf Pack

Carrying clothing: One theory is that the werewolves carry their clothes with them. This theory was most famously espoused by Stephanie Meyer in her Twilight saga books. In the books, the werewolves tend to walk around only wearing shorts. The main reason for this is because she says that the werewolves must carry a change of clothes with them when they transform into their wolf form so that when they transform back into human form they are not standing around naked. A pair of shorts is easier to carry instead of a whole outfit – so whaala! Werewolves tend to walk around bare-chested (according to Meyer). But how would a werewolf carry a change of clothes with them? (..especially and specifically the Twilight werewolves as they are the type of werewolf which transforms completely into wolves and have no hands, so how is that possible?!) The answer that Meyer came up with is that the werewolves carry around a little bag which is attached to one of their legs with a rope. When they run around, the little bag just goes with them because it is tied to them. Then, when they transform back into their human form, they open the bag and pull out their change of clothing – which is usually just a pair of shorts and no shirt.

The Wolfman

Clothing stays on the werewolf: Another theory, that is much simpler, is that when a werewolf physically transforms, the clothing might tear a little where larger muscles appear, but for the most part, the clothing will stay intact. So, when a werewolf becomes a werewolf, he/she remains fully clothed. One example of this in current-day cinema is in the movie the Wolfman. If you notice, the wolfman has a shirt and pants…they have just torn at the chest and arms and thighs where muscles have started to bulge and shift during the physical transformation. When the wolfman werewolf transforms back into human form, he is not naked, but rather has torn, tattered clothing hanging on his body. This idea of clothing staying on the werewolf is the oldest of the ideas that the media has as it is the most conservative, depicting a werewolf that is not running around shirtless or naked, but rather fully clothed.

Being Human

Werewolves become naked: The last theory in regard to what happens to werewolf clothing is that the clothing does in fact get fully destroyed during a physical transformation – as the muscles bulge, shift, and change, the clothing tears away and becomes unusable. When the werewolf is running around in the transformed state, this does not pose much of a problem. When the werewolf transforms back into his/her human state however, the problem becomes that the human is now completely naked with no clothing at all. Which means that the werewolf will attempt to time his / her transformation so that it occurs at some point where he/she is in a secluded area. If the werewolf is not in a secluded area when the transformation occurs, then the werewolf must quickly recover his sense and hide until he is able to find any type of clothing that he can throw on. One of the most common shows that you’ll see this on is Being Human.

Believe what you see right? That’s what I thought. If i never see one how can I believe it? But I really wanted to believe that the p-shift was possible, and deep in my heart I knew that I would be able to do it.

I mean it sounds so easy right? An empty space is where you need to be, not cleared of all objects empty but the kind of empty where there will be no distractions. People can’t be around, tv’s and radios can’t be on, even the man-made sounds from outside have to be muted this is why so many have to go out to the country to try to make the p-shift happen, in the country there are less man-made sounds to be heard, and if you wait until night you have the best chance. The country is far though and it can be done in a house ideally if you are in the city.

I never realized how loud a wristwatch could be until I began to focus. I threw it out. I was sitting on the floor, legs crossed, back straight, hands on knees. Laying down would be much more comfortable to me but the difficulty in the lying down position of running the risk of falling asleep or going into a doze before making the shift happen, it will happen and you wont even know it until you wake up from you nap! I have heard of stories of people falling asleep and then shifting but I wanted to do it while awake.

While sitting there I began the meditation process, clearing the mind of all the clutter, clearing the body of all the stress, attempting to clear all thoughts until there is not one left. Every thought and every muscle in the body must be in it’s most relaxed state. I thought to myself that trying to create this “perfect” atmosphere would be the hardest part of the p-shift, I was wrong.

Native Americans believe in werewolves.
The Navajo (Native Americans of the Southwestern United States) have a term for werewolves (or what they call skinwalkers) – the Yenaldlooshi (more commonly however, the Navajo werewolf goes by the term Skinwalker). The Navajo word Yenaldlooshi roughly translates to “he who trots along here and there on all fours”(hence the derivation of skinwalker). So for those humans that scoff at werewolf mythology and legends as a being solely of movie culture – think again…the Navajo culture’s beliefs are not based on movies of any kind – the legends go back generations, told down through the years only during the daytime, as it is superstitious to talk of the Yenaldlooshi at night.

The Navajo’s Yenaldlooshi are not what you would typically imagine the werewolf to be. They are not humans afflicted with an unwanted curse, but rather witches who wear a coyote or wolf pelt on nightly forays, seeking revenge against humans that have wronged them. Once the witch dons the animal pelts it give the wearer strength and speed, and often stories of Skinwalkers tell of them being able to travel hundreds of miles at extreme speeds. They are also said to have extraordinatory senses as well as the ability for mind control. Attacks from the Skinwalker or Yenaldlooshi are not easily identified, as they rarely leave any evidence, so it can be hard to determine whether or not it is a Skinwalker that is haunting you. Once you have finally determined that you are being haunted by a Skinwalker, ridding yourself of it is equally hard, although it is said that a medicine man can perform certain ceremonies to help get rid of the Skinwalker.

Since one of the Skinwalker’s main purposes of being and one of the central motivations it has is revenge, it is important to note that Skinwalkers are not kind beings. They have a purpose, and it is not to live quietly among the community.

Earlier this week a man on Bainbridge Island – which is located near Seattle, Washington – was found waving a sword and claiming to be a werewolf hunter. The man was outside of the parking lot of a ProBuild hardware store. He claimed he was “hunting werewolves and chuds”. The man was taken in for evaluation.

This story is not good news for werewolves. The Seattle community is likely already bubbling with the news and everyone is talking about werewolves in Washington. Werewolves in the area need to be especially careful with their identity.

Who knows whether or not this man was a real werewolf hunter or not? There is the possibility that it was a indeed a crazed man. But there is also the possibility that he was a real werewolf hunter. Yes, it is true that werewolf hunters typically maintain a low profile so as not to be identified by humans. But it is possible that this was a real werewolf hunter that for some reason blew his cover…the most likely reason being that the werewolf got the better of the man and caused the man to lose his normal cool. Or perhaps the werewolf terrorized the man to this point on purpose with the idea of putting him away for good!

Regardless of if the man was a real werewolf hunter or not, the fact remains that he has brought unwanted attention to werewolves in the Seattle Washington area. Right now humans in the area don’t believe in the story the werewolf hunter gave them but if there are any werewolves in the area that inadvertently reveal themselves the rumors as to the man’s supposed “craziness” could quickly turn into widespread panic at the possibility there are real werewolves in the area.

Werewolves in the Seattle area should maintain a low profile until this blows over – other real werewolf hunters could be watching the news and the area – also we don’t want rumors of a werewolf sighting to follow the capture of a (real or not!) werewolf hunter!
