Dear I Love Werewolves, please tell me why…

The following question was submitted to ILW…it has been posted here with the express permission of the writer.

Why are people so much more willing to accept vampires than werewolves?
Everywhere you look vampires are being glorified – they are in advertisements selling products, the are in movies playing romantic leads, they are the main characters in bestseller books. What about werewolves? Why aren’t werewolves given the same attention and acceptance that vampires are given?

Our reader brings up a very good question – one that we have often questioned and thought about and discussed.  Vampires are indeed more popular in today’s society than werewolves are. They are more accepted. They are more romanticized.  They are more “glorified”.  But this might be a good thing.  With less popularity comes more anonymity, and with that comes more flexibility to be true to oneself.  Without a spotlight shining on you don’t you feel more free?

So while we may only hazard guesses as to why werewolves aren’t given the same amount of attention as vampires, maybe we should be thankful for it. Yes, there is a certain undeniable disappointment that werewolves aren’t as universally popular and accepted as vampires, but when they do make a showing in commercials, or novels, or movies, they are much more memorable just for the fact that they are more mysterious.  And that in itself is its own glorification. 🙂

I think more people are willing to accept that vampires may be real more than accepting that werewolves may be real because they can’t wrap their minds around the possibility of the human body changing into a large wolf like that. Whereas vampires don’t change body form, they stay in a human shape all the time. That’s just my opinion on why society thinks that, though.
