Do werewolves have free will to choose to become shapeshifters?

To a human, the question on whether or not werewolves have free will to become a werewolf is (or so they think) pretty obvious.  Most humans think that werewolves do not choose to become shapeshifters, but are rather forced into becoming one by a werewolf bite.  Hollywood perpetuates this myth, and so, werewolves, by human standards, are considered victims of circumstance.

This is not entirely true.  Werewolves can generally be broken down into two categories – those that have chosen their path of their own free will, and those who have not, but rather fate has decided for them.

By design

There are many werewolves that have chosen to become shifters.  As information becomes more widespread about what a werewolf is, represents, and can be, more and more seek to become one.    They seek to become werewolves for strength, power, and abilities that they can gain.  They see becoming a werewolf as a gift.  Becoming a werewolf by design is however a challenging road.  The legends about the ways to become a werewolf are not always clear, nor are they always correct.

By fate

On the other side of the coin, there also are some werewolves that have become shapeshifters by no choice of their own.  Some that fall into this category have what they believe to be a “curse”.  Many of these werewolves, if they could, would most likely try to find a remedy to their “unwanted” problem. They feel that their state of being was forced upon them, and they want nothing more than to be simply human again.  That is not to say that all who did not choose be become werewolves are not happy!   For example, often those who have been born as werewolves are most likely to be happy, as they have been able to grow with their abilities and develop them over time rather than having a whole new state of being thrust upon them unexpectedly.

  1. There are 3 types of werewolves. Voluntary and involuntary.

    Alpha-alphas chose to be werewolves.

Beta-originally beta is an assistant alpha. But in this case it means the werewolves who don’t choose to be a werewolf they normally do not have control over the werewolf form.

Pureblood-these do not choose to be a werewolf. They do have control over the werewolf form.

  5. RebeccaGoldentail says:

    I was born this way.

  6. Lycanhope says:

@elderwerewolf777: Um, as far as I know, most of that is wrong.
@william: Next to no knowledge on demons, so I can’t help with that, but I do know that most of these werewolf “symptoms” are mostly just coincidence, and the rest are things that happen to regular humans as well. I wouldn’t advise trusting them too much.
    @RebeccaGoldentail: Yes. Perfect summary.

  7. she wolf says:

I’m not a werewolf as you think. But I can turn into a WOLF with free will. She lives inside me. I can talk to her whenever I want.

  8. Lycanhope says:

@she wolf: Same here, though mine isn’t a separate entity, just a different side to the same coin.

  9. she wolf says:

@Lycanhope: Yep. I have two identities and sometimes would ask me to rest inside and take over me to explore the “outside world”.

  10. A werewolf does not only change at fullmoon, a werewolf can change at will but the full moon or anger can cause them to lose control. You can become a werewolf by these ways, bitten or scratched by a werewolf, given the power through sorcery or born that way

  11. CelloChick says:

Can a REAL werewolf teach me how to shift or bite me?? I would like to become one of the werewolf culture.

  12. Mary says:

Hi. This is probably a stupid question, but do you play the cello? I pay the cello in my middle school orchestra. Oh and, welcome.

  13. Mary says:

play, not pay. uugh stupid L key!

  14. Fullmane Varulv says:

I have to force myself into the change. It’s very painful at times, and can be very exhausting. I can change at will but it’s easier if I am upset or angry. I wasn’t sure what was happening the first time I did it. I was Faster, Stronger, more agile, and I could hear and smell everything. After researching it quite a bit, I discovered that my ancestors worshipped wolves so much that they themselves could transform their minds and bodies to mimic what they called Varulv. This is what I was born into, Varulv Fullmane, translates from Norwegian to English as Werewolf Elder. At first I was afraid. But now I’m enlightened. Are their others out there like me? It is hard to tell The Fake from the Real.

  16. Lycanhope says:
