There are 12 full moons this year, and the dates of this year’s full moons will be different from last year.  The reason for this is because the lunar cycle only lasts twenty-nine days, meaning that each year the moon becomes whole on different days.  Each moon also has its own name associated with it, which typically does not vary from year to year.  This is a tradition which dates back to Native Americans which was used to keep track of the seasons.  Often an entire month was referred to as its full moon name!
