the Seven Demons
There are ancient Sumerian writings which talk about a group called “the Seven Demons“. These creatures are described and written about in various texts from ancient times. There are some researchers who have interpreted these demons to be what we consider “vampires”.
The texts describe the creatures as being destructive, evil, and violent – true demons. They are described as having powers similar to a God, and use that power against humans. One thing notable about their description however, which has linked them with vampires is that they are said to “devour blood” mainly at night and to be “immortal”. Matching this description with tht of the present day vampire, it would appear that this blood-drinking, night-stalking immortal could perhaps be a vampire!
The book which described the “Seven Demons” in more detail is called The Devils And Evil Spirits Of Babylonia, Being Babylonian and Assyrian Incantations against the Demons, Ghouls, Vampires, Hobgoblins, Ghosts, and Kindred Evil Spirits, Which Attack Mankind and was written at the turn of the century – around 1904. The legends which it calls upon are hundreds of years old and reference legends from ancient Mesopotamia which date back to 3000 BC.
What is particularly interesting is that the Sumerians are often considered to be one of the first civilizations on earth…if the Seven Demons hold any truth, this could mean that vampires date back to the beginning of civilization!
Could the Seven Demons be the ancestors of modern day vampires?
Could they be ancient vampires themselves?
