Werewolf Transformations – the belt

How to become a werewolf?

The most unusual method to transform into a werewolf that I’ve heard of is the belt… There are references throughout history of people who have transformed into werewolves thanks to wearing a special belt or strap.  The belt is often said to be a gift from the Devil (although usually anything unusual or magical is attributed to the Devil, so who knows if that’s where it really came from). It is said that when worn, it transforms the wearer into a wolf.

It is unclear whether or not there is just one belt that has been passed down through generations and shows up with different people throughout time, or if there are many different belts.  Either way, I’m not sure if this method actually exists or not, as I have never heard of any present day transformations attributed to a belt…references to the belt are all at least a couple of hundred years old and all refer to werewolves.

This is most common in Germany.
And the belt is made from either a wolf’s pelt, a humans, or a criminals skin.

Thankyou. I adore such folklore. For example, there is a shrine in Germany at a crossroads with a lit candle on it. If the candle ever goes out, the werewolf underneath that shrine will return or one of his chilren will become a were.

Well, that is not true, neccesarily. That idea was one based upon ignorance and fear of the unknown. I believe that the use, not the item’s origins, dictates where or not it is associated with Satan.
