Werewolf woodcutting

The image below is from a 500 year old woodcutting by Lucas Cranach Starszy, an artist from the German Renaissance.  The central theme of the woodcutting focuses on what appears to be a man on his knees with what might be a child in his mouth….a man whose bestial instincts have taken over….a man that is a werewolf!  This image was made hundreds of years ago in the year 1512 – long, long before Hollywood popularized the werewolf.  Images such as this show how deeply rooted in human’s history werewolves truly are.  It helps us remember that before there was Jacob from Twilight or George from Being Human, there were artists that were creating images of creatures people truly feared, believed in, and even worshipped.

  1. what familiy’s coat-of-arms is above the house?

  2. What are you talking about??????

  3. Lee Ann says:

@Kelly (just is) first off, excellent observation of the crest. However finding the family it belongs too is next to impossible seeing as over history there has been so many used. That being said, the symbolism in the crest can be easily decoded; the black represents grief white represents peace or serenity and the two upwards swords commonly show a time of war or conflict. The artist of the painting may of just put in the crest as a symbolic gesture.

  4. @ Velix, a Coat-Of-Arms in earlier centuries were used to identify from what family someone was from and offten something accomplished by a member of that family.

@Lee Ann, i was kind of figuring that if the crest did belong to a family, that it most likely would not have been in recorded history (or easily accessed recorded history) making the family near impossible to find.

  5. Like a family crest in the form of a flag?

  6. Lee Ann says:

you might be able to find the general family line that uses similar symbols…

  7. I know a family with the surname Adams. They have their crest on their truck. That is actaully creepy.Maybe we should all wear necklaces with our crests on it.

  8. @ Velix Hollow: What’s a surname?

Holy crap! Birds know my phone number! They just called me; I heard them chirping on the answering machine!!! :O

  9. Nothing really,it is useless in a workplace unless you are rich or famous. But it is still a part of you,you carry your family’s pride in that name.WOW,I sometimes amaze myself.

  10. Kelly (just is) says:

Ha, family pride. One of my ancestors helped Boothe assasinate Lincoln. From there in drunks, sailors, pot heads, pill poppers and now a werewolf. Odd, now that i think of it. I think my uncle might have been one too before he died.

  11. Lee Ann says:

Thats pretty awesome lol my ancestors all did huge things for canada… Like 4 of them have the order of Canada… I’m supposed to do something great but don’t bet on it 😛

  16. Aconissa says:

I know it sounds ridiculous, but a good book about werewolves in history is “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Werewolves”. A very good read. It’s written by a doctoral student and thus has the sense of a more intellectual viewpoint, but the author is open minded to the existence if werewolves.
