wolfman transformation

There is nothing better than watching good werewolf transformation scenes. The new Wolfman movie (which is about to come out in less than a week) has some pretty cool shots, and although it does stereotype the transformation process in a certain way, it is still very fun to watch and compare to the original version of the movie.

The depiction of the wolfman transformation from the first, original 1941 Universal Pictures version of the movie to the modern version has not changed too very much in feeling. Both versions depict the werewolf transformation process as a horrible, painful bone-crunching event. The viewer is left to think that the transformation is an ugly process…particularly, and much more so in the newer version. Part of this is because in the new version of the movie, the technology that brings the viewer into the mind of the wolfman has come a long way, and you can now see every part of the process.

The original wolfman movie had some transformation scenes, but they were subtle. The focus was on the feet.

The new wolfman movie, with Benicio Del Toro, focuses much more on the whole body (we see the hands and face transform), but still gives a nod to the original wolfman transformation with a shot of the feet as the wolfman crawls away.

At first, the pain is like that of a stone fish’s sting (That fish is found in Australia. It’s poison is so powerful that even morphine can’t stop the agonizing pain.) After a while, though, you get used to it. These first few transformations are called the purgatory stage.

The common stereotype produced by Hollywood is that humans endure pain while transforming into werewolves everytime. That isn’t true. In fact, some lycans take pleasure in transforming and have control over their own shifting methods and moods.

Believe what you want, but what I said is the truth.

I like the way the 2010 wolfman’s transformation shows how hard it is on his body. In the novelisation by Jonathan Maberry, there is a great description of the transformation
