Wolf Island

In different parts of the world, there are a few different references to places called “Wolf Island“. Are they home to wolves? Is there a wolf island – werewolf connection?  And is it even possible for a wolf to live on an Island?

Yes, it is possible for wolves to live on islands.
There are some references to wolves  living on islands, the most famous being the now extinct Falkland Island Wolf.

As far as current islands, there are many that are named after “wolf” but none of these appear to have wolves living on them. For example, one of the main Wolf Islands is the Wolf Island Wilderness located in the United States which is actually part of the Wolf Island National Wildlife Refuge on a barrier island in southern Georgia.  This particular Wolf Island is actually a bird sanctuary comprised of mostly saltwater marsh areas.   The wilderness area is closed to visitation, and there are no references to actual wolves, humans, or werewolves living on the island. Another island is Wolfe Island in Canada.  Wolfe Island is the largest of the Thousand Islands in Ontario, and is inhabitated.  It is a heavily wooded island, but does not seem to have any wolves inhabiting it.

How would a wolf even get to an island to begin with?
The two most logical ways that wolves would be able to get to an island would be either by man introducing them to the island, or by them swimming across to the island themselves from the mainland. The former theory does seem like the most logical choice, because how would a wolf swim to an island? Can wolves even swim? Yes wolves can swim, and based on recent footage of Arctic Canadian wolves taking to the lakes to hunt, it seems like the possibility that they could swim a few – or even a couple of hundred – miles to a lake could be quite possible.

Wolf Island Novel – Werewolves !
Besides real actual Wolf Island places around the world, there is also a fiction novel called Wolf Island. It is part of the Demonata series by Darren Shan, and is about a teenager named Grubbs Grady who is has a “curse” which turns him into a werewolf. He finds out that a group called the Lambs are breeding werewolves at a place called Wolf Island.
